What God is Teaching Me through my Failures

{Guest Post}

I would like to thank Tauna for sharing her heart with us today! What a great and powerful message God has given her. Read on and be blessed!! ~ Annette

“‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.” ~ Zechariah 4:6

I love that God purposes to teach us anything at all. He is God, and we are His children. What a beautiful privilege. The great I AM slows down, so to speak, and draws near to step us through the lessons He has for us.

He is so patient and kind. He holds His hand over ours when we can’t quite get it right. In His intimate, Creator-knowledge of us, He teaches with words and circumstances perfectly suited to our hearts.

And yet we are so slow to transformation.

At least, I am.

God has been speaking to me in His gentle, pointed way. He’s calling me out on my (perhaps not so very) deep-down belief that maybe, just maybe, I really can do this whole gig called life all on my own.

My words declare and my mind understands that “apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) That “‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.”(Zechariah 4:6)

He calls me to be transformed by the Holy Spirit into His likeness, overcoming those sins that I mourn in my soul. But instead, I salute the Savior and go off to pull myself up by the bootstraps, determining to be a better Christian.

And I fail.

I fall flat on my face. Every. Single. Time.

What has God been teaching me? That He alone is able to change me. I can’t.

I can’t be a loving wife but by His grace.

I can’t teach and disciple my children except by His empowerment.

I can’t get through my day full of joy and gentleness without His mercy.

I can’t finish well

I can’t do His work

I can’t even breathe without Him.

But God…

He has given me a starting point. A phrase to meditate on. It’s a phrase that encompasses it all and makes my heart, soul, and mind line up to sing to Him throughout the day.

You alone, Lord.

You alone plant this great desire for more of you

You alone equip me to serve you.

You alone empower to do the work of your calling.

You alone overcome sin in me.

You alone transform my soul.

You alone are able.

You alone are worthy.

You alone.

From You alone. Through You alone. For You alone.

So, I’ve been going through my days with “You alone, Lord” ringing in my mind and coming to save me from myself in the hard moments. He boils it all down to the most essential teaching for my heart. And I’m finally beginning to see transformation where I’ve been longing for it for so long.

“Not to us, LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.” ~ Psalm 115:1
